Movie Review: Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars…
BY VINCENT LAMBERT
Director: John Roecker
Cast: Johnny Hazzard, Jason Ridge, Nick Capra, Bret Wolfe, Jeremy Jordan, Jason Hawke, Nick Piston, Danny Vox, Joey Milano, Others.
Even though here! TV is in the business of marketing programing to the gays, that doesn’t mean it always presents its subject matter in the best possible light. Case in point: the documentary Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars *but were afraid to ask. This film from director John Roecker, which led to a six-part series that aired on the cable channel last year, boasts a big-name porn star cast, but it offers an anything but positive depiction of the gay adult industry. It starts predictably enough with an off-camera voice asking top stars such as Johnny Hazzard (above), Jason Ridge (below), Nick Capra, Bret Wolfe, Jeremy Jordan and Jason Hawke how they got their porn names, why they decided to get into the business (Capra did it to piss off his mother), what their first scene was like and other innocuous questions. But about halfway through, the questions and film take a turn toward the dark side. And we mean that literally as Roecker has photographed these mostly young and good-looking models in extremely unflattering and harsh lighting. Their faces are cast in shadow and the blank walls behind them give a gritty and unappealing look.
Though the coming-out stories remain upbeat (Jeremy Jordan tells a funny one about breaking the news of his sexual orientation to his grandmother during a family dinner), once the topic turns to escorting and drug abuse, the film becomes a one-way ticket to depression and doom. An emotional Joey Milano shares tales of his bareback work, which ultimately leads to a troubling story about a producer knowingly allowing a model with an STD to participate in a shoot. It’s no surprise when Milano reveals his HIV-positive status. One model shoots up on a toilet bowl and another smokes crack for the cameras. Ah, the glamour!
The film departs from the Q&A format to go on set with Nick Capra and his then-boyfriend as they shoot a scene together for this movie. This is ground that has already been covered (and to much better effect) in Ronnie Larsen’s revealing 1997 documentary Shooting Porn. When the boyfriend goes AWOL on a drug bender and then returns to beat up Capra, there’s a feeling that we’ve seen this story before. Every negative stereotype about gay porn and its workers is reinforced, and the subjects often seem one-dimensional and cliché. A brutally honest Capra and a thoughtful Jason Ridge musing on self-esteem and image come alive as fully formed humans, but most of the others just seem like they’re playing the part of a desperate porn star destined to a sad end.
Roecker uses vintage clips from films that depict homosexuals as threats to society and outcasts, but they do little to lighten the tone. Tattooed model Nick Piston gets the last word. After grappling with his own feelings of shame and insecurity, he ends the film on an almost positive note, but it’s too little, too late. Everything You Wanted to Know… has already ignored any of the fun, creativity and entertainment value that the industry might offer to gay men, and instead leads us to a dark and gloomy place, leaving its audience—and subjects—down and out.

Movie Review: Auditions, Vol. 26, Michael’s Bed

BY VINCENT LAMBERT
Director: Michael Lucas.
Cast: Michael Lucas, Jason Crew, Sebastian Rivers, Jack MacCarthy, Jackson Wild, Doucet.
The 26th installment in the Auditions series should come with a warning: If you’re not a fan of director and star Michael Lucas, stay away! The full-lipped Russian superstar appears in every scene, having sex with a bevy of porn stars and even one actual newcomer. First, Jason Crew discusses his awards and the many films he has made before diving into Lucas’s ample crotch. These two get off on lots of great kissing, sharing an electric connection and refusing to be distracted by what sounds like a party going on outside their hotel room. They soon progress to 69 action, and Lucas performs his patented helicopter fuck move. Crew offers up plenty of gaping-butthole close-ups, which seems to please Lucas. In the end, Crew splooges into his own mouth and Lucas feeds him what he missed. Besides the annoying ambient sound, this scene is a keeper. Thankfully, Sebastian Rivers doesn’t have to submit to one of those banal pre-sex interviews. He just goes right to sucking Lucas’s oversize meat. This leads to more 69 fun and eventually the beefy and surprisingly docile Rivers goes bottoms up. He and Lucas seem ill-suited, and poor sound mars a brief post-orgasm interview. The only newcomer, Cajun model Doucet, is the victim of glaring lighting and a badly edited cum shot. (He also gets pissed on by Lucas in the DVD extras.)
But it’s sexy Jack MacCarthy (back after working for Titan Media under a different name) who steals the show in what is set up as a solo scene. Hairy and handsome MacCarthy has a lithe dancer’s body, and he manages to twist himself into some provocative positions (there’s some brief self-sucking of his wet mushroom head) while jacking and talking seductively to Lucas off-camera. But the tension soon builds to the point where Lucas just steps in, unzips and starts pounding Jack’s perfect ass. There is real heat here as MacCarthy gives nasty verbal encouragement (including his willingness to take the Lucas load), all while looking young, fresh and innocent. Hot! Poor Jackson Wild has to follow this winning scene (better sequencing might have helped here), but the cute newbie does well, sucking and bottoming with energy (after divulging that he dated porn superstar Jason Ridge! Who knew?). However, this is Lucas’s show from start to finish. He performs like the porn veteran he is—displaying his still impressive physique and boundless sexual prowess—and directs with his usual iron fist. But the lack of production standards is troubling, especially for an auteur who has always been such a stickler for the details.

News: Jason Ridge Announces Retirement

Porn superstar Jason Ridge has taken to his blog to let fans know that he is retiring from the adult industry. In a post from last Thursday, Ridge writes, “There are more pressing issues in my life that are more important than this silly lifestyle that I have created known as Jason Ridge. Maybe I will be back or maybe I will find something new and creative to become a part of my life.” He goes on to say that he is proud to have been a part of the porn business. Ridge, who appeared in numerous films, including Nasty Nasty, Hole Patrol and Up Country, and went on to direct and form his own RidgeLine Films studio, has been a popular and often controversial model since his debut in 2003. In light of that, he adds, “Honestly I never wanted to be talked about. I just wanted a little fun and maybe some fame to come my way. I’ve enjoyed the ride, my friends, but it’s time for me to grow up and take my life and responsibilities that have been handed to me and take them seriously.” To read the full entry, visit jasonridge.blogspot.com.

Movie Review: Jet Set Big Dicks

BY VINCENT LAMBERT
Directors: Various.
Cast: Ken Ryker, Cody Cash, Jason Ridge, Tag Eriksson, Paolo Cortez, Gabriel Sinclair, Justin Gemini, Ricky, Helmut Muller, Evan Rochelle, Chad Driver, Adam Lee, Peter Stevens, G. Thierry, Verdo Colt, Hun Attila, Strong One, Bob.
Jet Set Men weighs in with seven classic scenes in this collector’s edition. Big Dicks is a solid compilation that is heavy on foreign fare, which was a specialty of the company several years ago. Highlights include nubile twinks Helmut Muller and Evan Rochelle getting nasty in a machine shop, and Hun Attila and Verdo Colt taking part in a five-man orgy in an army barracks. Domestically, Justin Gemini and Gabriel Sinclair start out at a photo shoot but end up fucking for the photographer. Gemini is superhung and a fine performer—hmm, wonder whatever became of him.
On the porn star side, handsome Jason Ridge makes out with Paolo Cortez in front of a big picture window. Luckily for voyeurs, Ridge takes Cortez’s thick piece before shooting perfect ropes of cum. Well done! Cortez also bangs onetime star (and current NYC real estate mogul) Tag Eriksson in a hot outdoor scene that makes one wish the big Swede had stuck around the industry a bit longer. But superstar Ken Ryker is the biggest (and we mean biggest!) star here in a great duo with Cody Cash. Directed by Gino Colbert, the scene takes place in a glamorous mansion and is a class production all the way. Cash spies Ryker washing his car from a window and attempts to lure him upstairs. Ryker flirts by hosing himself down and showing off his famous package. Once inside, Ryker feeds Cash his feet and famous bent cock. And after fucking Cash hard in the bathroom, he also feeds him a load. Amid today’s cum-eating controversies, it’s easy to forget that Colbert has always been an innovator. Jet Set Big Dicks is definitely worth collecting. (Jet Set Men)

News: Here! Network to Air Gay Porn TV Series

The here! gay cable-TV network, home to homo-friendly shows such as The Lair and Dante’s Cove, has announced the production of a new series that will focus on the gay porn industry. Titled Everything You Wanted to Know About Gay Porn Stars (but were afraid to ask), the show will consist of six 30-minute episodes and a one-hour special, and is set to air next winter.
Everything You Wanted to Know… will give a behind-the-scenes look at the gay side of the porn business and focus on the lives of those who work in it. Some of the models scheduled to be featured on the series include Johnny Hazzard, Jason Ridge, Nick Capra, Jason Hawke, Nick Piston and Brad Benton.
“I interviewed 16 men who perform in gay porn [for the show] and asked them what makes them tick,” director John Roecker says. “This is their forum and their voice. When I spoke to these men, I wanted to know what their parents thought, how they got into the industry and what their ultimate goals were. I found them incredibly bright, sensitive and inspiring.”
Well, that doesn’t sound exactly groundbreaking, but it is TV exposure. Cable TV exposure. If you feel like paying extra for it. For more information, visit www.heretv.com.

News: Jason Ridge to Make Directorial Debut

Porn superstar and producer Jason Ridge has announced that he will add directing to his list of accomplishments. His Ridgeline Films has already produced hits such as A Rising Star and Beyond Malibu; now, with the company’s third release, Up Country, Ridge will make his directorial debut. And the sexy stud will not only produce and direct the film, but he will write the screenplay as well.
“I’ve worked with—and continue to work with—a lot of amazing directors,” Ridge says, “and when I’m not physically on camera, I have watched and learned from them. It’s a major undertaking, directing your own movie, so I made this first one simple with minimal dialogue and some hot scenes. This is my baby, and I’m very proud of it. I hope everyone enjoys watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.”
Ridge also appears in Up Country, topping exclusive Damian Rios, who gets banged by Wolf Hudson in another scene. Rounding out the cast is Enrique Cuerro, who sticks it to Jackson Wild, and Maliek Taylor, who gives up his ass to Sean Preston (no relation to Brit Brit). Up Country will be available for pre-order on RidgelineFilms.com in late May and will street in June.

Event: More GAYVN Awards Coverage

STORY AND PHOTOS BY VINCENT LAMBERT
We continue our coverage of the 10th-Annual GAYVN Awards with more exclusive pictures and dish from the show, which was held last Saturday at the Giftcenter in San Francisco. Sirius Radio personalities Derek and Romaine hosted, filling the big shoes of last year’s host Kathy Griffin (who interestingly booked the Castro Theatre, where the awards took place in 2007, on the same night to perform her comedy act. Our spies tell us that Griffin had faux protesters outside the theater carrying signs that read, “You want an awards show? Suck this!”). The duo decided to answer their very vocal critics (especially the guys at Naked Sword who compared them to potted houseplants) by bringing two actual plants on-stage to start the show. It took the audience a while, but eventually they caught on.
Before that, Lady Bunny performed one of her hysterical song parodies geared especially to the crowd (“All That Jazz” became “All That Jizz”). Later, the NYC drag queen and DJ returned with a string of one-liners that skewered her XXX-rated audience (Sample joke: “I told Michael Lucas to act his age, so he died!”). Chi Chi LaRue, a former host of the show, also took the stage to hype the crowd for the beleaguered new hosts and to ask that the industry come together, even if just for that one night. Overall, Derek and Romaine acquitted themselves nicely, offering up some bitchy barbs and (in the case of Romaine) an intentional nip slip. But when all was said and done, their participation was kept to a minimum and, thanks to some of our fellow judges who rarely stopped yapping throughout the show, we could barely hear the leafy duo!
Some of our favorite moments: the entrance of porn It Couple of the Moment Jesse Santana and Guy Parker, both tan beyond their years and chomping gum in unison; the introduction of Hall of Fame presenter Gino Colbert with his name spelled out on the ass cheeks of Falcon’s exclusive power pair Aden and Jordan Jaric; the well-deserved induction of longtime porn superstar Rod Barry into the GAYVN Hall of Fame; Amazonia: Capture and Release director Dennis Bell mentioning its late star Danny Roddick when he accepted the award for Best Ethnic-Themed Video (Latin); and Grunts’ Chris Ward thanking “all the skinny people who make these movies possible” when he won Best Director with Ben Leon.
However, not everyone was completely satisfied with the results. The morning after the awards, Lucas Entertainment president and CEO Michael Lucas sent out a mass e-mail to GAYVN judges and media wondering why his hit sex comedy The Intern (which was named Best Renting Title of 2007) won four awards but his glossy Gigolo, a more serious bid for award approval, received none. “So what went wrong with Gigolo that it got nothing?” Lucas wrote. “If you praised Gigolo as a groundbreaking film, then acknowledge it. Gigolo is a serious feature that was raved about. The Intern is a cute comedy. What went wrong? Where is the common sense? I want the answers.”
Do you hear that, people? Lucas wants answers! What can we say? There’s nothing like a sore winner.
Seen (from top): Brent Corrigan and Chad Hunt; Titan Media exclusive Dean Flynn; Francesco D’Macho and Matthew Rush; Ridgeline Films founder Jason Ridge; COLT men Ricky Parks and Mitch Branson; The Intern team Tony Dimarco and Michael Lucas; Hall of Famer Lucas Kazan with presenter Gino Colbert; Barrett Long; Dominik Rider; and Lady Bunny down for the count.

Movie Review: Auditions, Volume 19

BY VINCENT LAMBERT
Director: Michael Lucas.
Cast: Michael Lucas, Christian Cruz, Jimmy, Trent Alexander, Danny B., Brian Bodine, Blu Kennedy, Nick Rider, Jason Ridge, Manuel Torres.
The latest entry in the Auditions series finds director Michael Lucas hosting a few big-name porn stars (Jason Ridge, Manuel Torres, Blu Kennedy) and a bunch of hopeful wannabes. When he’s not skewering the newbies for plucking their eyebrows, Lucas introduces a new bedroom set for the series. (Think 1970s paneled basement, or that Calvin Klein ad campaign that got banned for looking like kiddie porn!) The latest studs-in-training go through their paces in five tight scenes. Pale redhead Kennedy provides a lovely study in contrasts with black stud Brian Bodine. By the time these two flip-flop fuck, the sweat is dripping. New lovers Danny B. and Nick Rider (together for two whole weeks!) reveal to Lucas that they met online. When Lucas discovers that Rider is a ballet dancer, he makes him do a split in the nude. New Lucas exclusive Christian Cruz (currently making a splash in the big-budget sex comedy The Intern) debuts here, sucking off a sullen Jimmy. Sure, Jimmy is hung, but would it kill him to smile? The bubbly Cruz is a workhorse, providing excellent oral and shooting with abandon. Lucas steps before the cameras for a scene with Trent Alexander, a beefy stud from Atlanta with a shy grin and a penchant for being spanked. Lucas complies, and sucks his toes, too. He also performs his infamous “helicopter” move (look it up!), which drives Alexander wild. Porn vets Jason Ridge and Manuel Torres close out the movie by interviewing each other (sans Lucas) and then performing like the pros they are. Torres shows off his great hairy chest and Ridge displays his perfect butt, which is greatly appreciated by Torres. Eventually, both shoot big loads on Ridge. The Audition films aren’t known for their high production values (Lucas saves those for a few big-budget movies per year), but the no-frills approach (harsh lighting, traffic noise in the background) only adds to the charm. Viewers will feel lucky to have wandered into this retro basement. (Lucas Entertainment)

News: Ridgeline Films Signs First Exclusive

Ridgeline Films has announced the signing of its first exclusive, Damian Rios, the hot Latino star of the company’s soon-to-be-released Beyond Malibu and Up Country. The versatile hunk has a seven-inch cut cock and a sweet bubble butt that Ridgeline is putting to good use (he has bottomed in three scenes for the company, including a flip-flop with Braxton Bond in Beyond Malibu).
Rios was born in Dallas and raised in Florida, where he currently lives in Key West. He began working as a go-go dancer and stripper in 1999 but didn’t enter the industry until this year. “I decided I didn’t want to let it go by without me saying I at least did it,” Rios says. “Right now I am just enjoying it for what it is. I never thought when I did my first shoot in Los Angeles that I would ever be signed as an exclusive to a company, but Ridgeline has treated me like gold on every set, better than any other company. I knew right away they were the company I wanted to shoot for all the time, so I can’t believe it’s actually happened.”
Ridgeline Films CEO and president Jason Ridge says of the tattooed stud, “Damian embodies what I look for in a performer. He’s versatile, he’s energetic, he’s photogenic, he’s a dream to work with. We’re very lucky to have him as part of our family.”
